Join our celebrity roasters and toasters as they help us say "thank you" to Mayor Sam Sullivan for his 15 years on Vancouver City Council. This special Spirit of Vancouver® luncheon recognizes a unique life and Sam's very special commitment to our community.
As an early advocate for individuals with disabilities, and as a city councillor, and more recently as mayor, Sam Sullivan's perseverance in the face of often daunting challenges is a reminder to all of us that community service is an important part of our citizenship as individuals and businesses.
And while a skiing accident at the age of 19 made him a quadriplegic, "Citizen Sam" has never shied away from controversy, tough decisions or the rough and tumble of Vancouver politics, one of the city's most colourful and entertaining contact sports.
Now, as he prepares to leave City Hall, join us for some memories and laughs as we hear from those who know Sam Sullivan best, including folks on both sides of the political fence.

A shuttered Hastings Street business is now a vibrant art studio.
I hope you and members of your family will take the opportunity to participate in one of the many special Remembrance Day services taking place across the City. Lynn and I will be attending the City's annual service in Victory Square. Prior to the service, the Vancouver Bach Youth Choir will perform.
For the second year in a row, vehicles displaying veteran license plates have been exempted from on-street parking meter fees from November 4 to 11. EasyPark will also provide free parking to vehicles with veteran license plates.
City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, November 11 for Remembrance Day. It will reopen Wednesday, November 12 at 8:30 am.

Councillor Suzanne Anton (with Park Board Chair Konna Houghton, left) has helped
lead City Council's effort to make Vancouver one of the world's greenest cities
Last week, Vancouver City Council approved a series of recommendations to expand access to laneway housing across the City of Vancouver. The recommendations deliver on a key EcoDensity action item unanimously approved by Council in June.

Clr. B.C. Lee and Mayor Sullivan in 2008 parade to celebrate Lunar New Year
Recently I had the honour of spending some time with former United States President Bill Clinton. He was in Vancouver to attend a conference about corporate social responsibility. President Clinton loves Vancouver.
I am pleased to report that during his presentation, he praised Vancouver's leadership on developing stringent green building standards. Earlier this year, our Council passed the strongest green building design plan in North America in association with EcoDensity.
On Tuesday I announced that the City of Vancouver and Bombardier Transportation will provide a modern streetcar demonstration service to Vancouver residents and visitors during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The Downtown Streetcar 2010 Demonstration Project is a state-of-the-art, accessible and sustainable transportation project that will connect Granville Island to the Canada Line Olympic Village Station during 60 days of celebration between January 21 and March 21, 2010.
The City of Vancouver has also received permission from the International Olympic Committee and VANOC to name the streetcar service The Olympic Line - Vancouver's 2010 Streetcar for the duration of the 2010 demonstration project.
Lynn and I returned to Vancouver this week from the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Beijing.

Mayor Sullivan meeting with Mayor of Beijing
on recent visit to China
In addition to attending the Games, I had the opportunity to meet with:

Mayor Sullivan visits the Great Wall of China on his Trail Rider
Well what a show! Last week, the 2008 Summer Olympics came to a close with a spectacular closing ceremony. I've been fortunate to be here in Beijing, joined last week by Clr. Suzanne Anton and soon to be joined by Clr. B.C. Lee. Next week, the Paralympic Games will begin and I will be honoured to join nine other Canadians that have been selected to carry the torch through Beijing.
As the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games wind down, the eyes of the world are turning to Vancouver in the lead up to 2010.
While China has set the bar high, I know that Vancouver and our athletes will make Canadians proud during our finest hour. City Council is working hard to make sure everything is being done to make sure our city is prepared.
When the world arrives in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the first thing they will discover is the world is already here. Athletes, visitors and the global media will find an inclusive city that celebrates diversity as a strength.
I hope you have been enjoying a safe and relaxing summer with friends and family. As usual, our city has been non-stop this year with a record number of special events in neighbourhoods across Vancouver. And while we are proud of our parties and celebrations, we have been getting lots of work done too.
We are in the midst of one of the largest building booms in our city's history. There are more than 1000 people working all out to complete the Athletes Village in Southeast False creek - and many more working to complete the Canada Line and new Convention Centre.

Walk with the Dragon Festival in Stanley Park
I hope you are looking forward to a safe and enjoyable long weekend. Canada Day is one of the most special holidays of the year. That is why City Council has agreed to support an investment in the Canada Day Fireworks for the second year in a row. This celebration will kick off another wonderful summer season of community celebrations around Vancouver. It promises to be a record year for special events in our city.
This past week was a busy one for us at City Council. Further to previous reports, I want to update you on some of the progress we are making on a number of important issues, including:
I am preparing this update as I have just returned from Hong Kong with a delegation of community leaders and the Vancouver Board of Trade. We had a very successful visit that allowed us to strengthen our economic relationship, share best practices and promote Vancouver in advance of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

In this report, please find updates on a number of the important issues our government is working on for you:
Thank you again for your ongoing interest in all these issues. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and ideas.
Yours truly,

Sam Sullivan
